Job Summary:

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking an experienced (minimum of 7 years attending level experience) to serve as Chief of Thoracic Surgery, a section within the Cardiothoracic Surgery Division.  The ideal candidate is thoracic track fellowship trained, ABS and ABTS Board certified, and is skilled in both open and minimally invasive VATS and robotic surgery for both malignant and benign thoracic diseases.  The candidate will join a well-established and experienced team of four thoracic surgeons at Indiana University Health System.  The team provides thoracic surgery coverage currently to five hospitals in the Indianapolis are.  The candidate will participate in the training and mentoring of residents and fellows in the General Surgery Residency Program and the highly competitive Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency Training Program (I-6).  The candidate will have access to ample opportunities for translational research in collaboration with the Department of Surgery.  The candidate is expected to take an active role in program development in leadership across several network hospitals.  There may be an opportunity for the candidate to work also on the Pulmonary Transplant Service at Methodist Hospital.

  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of experience. He or she will oversee a team of five dedicated intensivists and will work in a dyad leadership role with the surgical director of the CVICU which will be one of our current CV Surgeons. This role will lead a team intensivists and Advanced Practice Providers dedicated to the CV Surgery Intensive Care Unit. Critical care leadership experience in an academic medical center is preferred. This position will report to the CMO along with the Cardiovascular Surgery Service Line Leader and/or Academic Chief. 
  • IU Health Methodist Hospital is a growing cardiac, heart failure and transplant center and the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit is a 34-bed (with growth capacity) unit that treats acute and chronic critically ill patients with a wide variety of cardiac diseases and multi-organ dysfunction. The Surgical Director will develop practice standards and oversee quality metrics for the unit and lead monthly performance improvement meetings. This role will work in partnership with the Nursing director and Lead APP to oversee ongoing professional development programs for nursing staff and APPs.
  • The candidate must have an interest in the education of students, residents and fellows who rotate through the unit and be willing to foster research activity in the unit including clinical trials. The incumbent must be at ease working with a multidisciplinary team in a collaborative fashion managing the critically ill patient.
