IU Health Physicians - Medical Director, Emergency Medicine (Ball Memorial Hospital)

The Emergency Medicine Medical Director of IU Health Ball Hospital serves as the on-site clinical leader and supervisor, taking “ownership” for developing and coordinating the clinical service that assures a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, patient-oriented approach to care. The Medical Director is responsible for the appropriateness, quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the medical care delivered within the clinical service. Representing the clinical Department and serving as a liaison to the medical staff, he/she works with the Academic Chair, CMO, Nursing and Administrative leadership to 1) develop and implement clinical policies and guidelines, 2) assess clinical activities and performance, 3) assist with monitoring and attaining fiscal and utilization objectives, and 4) assure compliance with appropriate regulatory, accrediting and credentialing/privileging standards.

Ensures compliance with IU Health Ball Hospital medical staff bylaws and all related policies and procedures.

Participates in strategic planning in the areas of clinical quality, patient safety, patient satisfaction and the provision of cost effective clinical services, helps prioritize proposed programs and services, and actively supports resulting strategies.

Provides support for medical staff governance and direct oversight of physician services including medical staff applications, credentialing, reappointment’s, new physician orientation, compliance and peer review activities. Assumes responsibility for resolution of issues and problems related to clinical practice within the Service.

Recommends to the Medical Staff the criteria for clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided within the ED and recommends clinical privileges for each member of the ED.

Assures sufficient faculty coverage for all activities of the clinical service and helps assess and recruit potential faculty.

Helps recruit and assess key staff members, including preparing job descriptions and participating in probationary and annual performance reviews.

Assists in developing and providing continuing professional education programs for the medical staff and support staff and serves as a liaison to residency program and clerkship directors in matters concerning resident and medical student rotations.
